The Hell On Wheels Hot August Nights, Dirt Track Classic

British Customs was a proud sponsor of Meatball’s 1st Hell On Wheels Dirt Track Event. Meatball’s events are motorcycling at its purest. There are limited restrictions and endless possibilities for a good time. It sounded like a great platform for British Customs to do some testing and have some fun, so we entered three bikes into the event.

Bike #1:  Our first bike to enter the Hell On Wheels Challenge was the British Customs Desert Sled. The Desert Sled is a stripped dirt bike inspired Bonneville. Complete with dirt bike style fenders, stripped down controls, a new BC prototype drag pipe system, and knobby dirt bike tires this Triumph Bonneville was ready to dominate the track. The Desert Sled was ridden and tested by Sean D. who took three 1st place finishes and one 2nd place. Congratulations!

 

Bike #2:  Our second bike to enter the Hell On Wheels event was British Customs’ own team members daily rider “June”. Heath C.’s Triumph Bonneville was brought to the shop already rocking 95,000 cross country touring miles. Inspired by the infamous daredevil, Evel Knievel, “June” was overhauled for the track. Heath’s goal was to create a bike that he could dirt track but still ride comfortably on the street. The project began by reviewing the stock Triumph Bonneville’s driveline and controls. We started with the wheels and replaced the stock rims with 19” Excel rims and DOT flat track tires. Next we swapped out the risers and replaced the stock controls with upgraded 7/8” controls. Lastly, we installed a set of British Customs prototype Flat Track Triple Trees.  Only his second time racing at a dirt track event, Heath took home a 2nd and 4th place finish and slid out two times pushing his Bonneville as hard as he could.

Bike #3:  Our last bike to enter the challenge was a Triumph Scrambler acquired after the filming of the re-make “The Great Escape”. We recently built the Scrambler into an adventure bike, but quickly realized we needed a street tracker in the shop. Brian Catterson, former Editor of Motorcyclist Magazine, rode the project tracker and took home a 3rd place finish.

We arrived to the Perris ¼ mile dirt track with the goal of testing a few new designs and came out winners. It was great to see the Modern Triumphs go head to head with lighter more nimble bikes and come out on top. We proved that, with little to no modification, the Triumph can easily go from the street to the track! We will be posting video of the action and details of each build in the upcoming weeks.
